City Edge

Photos by Matt Gidley

The City Edge layout is basically set in the 1980s, but could be any era from the 1950s thru today by the changing of vehicles, signs and motive power. The City Edge layout often runs a wide range of locomotives and rolling stock, so at this time the layout is not "era" specific. The layout was built as a sideshow for friends and family that visit for a random party, sporting event or just to hang out and relax and enjoy life.

The city scene is 3 ft by 24 ft while the bridge scene is located in a 10 ft shadow box built into the wall to the left of the city. It contains three of the Overland brass bridges that they did about 10 or so years ago. Each bridge is a scale 225 ft in length, double track and they are strung together in a row. (See the "Streetrunning version #5" video on You-tube.) The main lines then travel across the hallway, thru the laundry room and into the staging area. The staging area has two yard areas, a programable turntable, transfer tracks and is the command center for the layout. The layout is controlled by the Digitrax radio control and there are 10 PSX power district managers that distribute the power to the layout. Power district managers are set at 5 amps.
