John's HOn3 two level layout features much of the northern district of the Rio Grande Southern and the lines only division point – Rico. Most of the railroad is in a 16’ by 22’ room. A fiddle yard and helix are in the adjacent shop area. Train control will be DCC (Lenz). The lower level consists of the staging area, Placerville, Vance Junction, and Lost Canyon. The upper level consists of Matterhorn, Trout Lake and the line into Rico and Rico. Starting at a hidden staging yard (Ridgway), the first stop is Placerville with a depot and warehouses. A stock yard and oil depot are located just down the track at Old Placerville. Past Placerville is the familiar Vance Junction area and a wye.

Trains exit the lower level past Vance Junction. The main line continues to the small town of Ophir via the Butterfly trestle above the beautiful Lake Fork of the San Miguel River while the wye leads to Pandora at the end of the Telluride Branch. Past Ophir, a portion of the high line leads to the little community of Matterhorn. The major industry at Matterhorn is the San Bernardo Mill. Then it’s on to Trout Lake and the highest point on the layout - Lizard Head Pass.

Space does not permit modeling the Lizard Head scene but the familiar peak can be seen beyond Meadow Creek. Then it’s down through Burns Canyon to Rico. At Rico, the Pro Patria Mill generates a good deal of traffic along with several other industries. The depot and engine servicing facilities are also present. The line leaves the main room to take the helix down to Lost Canyon and then on to staging (Durango). The main line is about 158’ which does not include the helix run. The branch to Pandora is about 23’.
